Hermes Franca - Robbed of Victory

Hermes Franca embroiled in controversial loss in Costa Rica

According to a report by Mike Chiappetta over at MMA, Franca was either the victim of a bad decision, or he was robbed, and clearly the victim of a fix.

With reports of shady, back door double dealing and a level of corruption that is so deep, it would shock even Don King, it appears Franca was not only hand-picked for this fight by the the promoter of Costa Rican-based Xtreme Vale Todo (XVT), Jean-Francois Billon, and Lu Dwyer, a successful California businesswoman who had become Ferrid Kheder's main sponsor, but he was chosen because they intended all along he would be the loser.

"Obviously, we know something went wrong there from the communication of the judges to the refereeing, to the announcement of the winner. I'm sure the corruption is due to resentment from my fight history there."
-- Jean-Francois Billon
Even Billon, Kheder, the referees, the judges, and several people in the audience admitted that something went terribly awry in the aftermath of the fight.

Amazingly, according to Chiappetta's report, Dave Jansen, Franca's cornerman for the event, "went so far as to pick the judges round-by-round scorecards out of the bathroom garbage can they had been dumped into," so pretty much there's no way Billon could continue to claim the judges scored the fight in favor of Kheder, and yet...he does.

There is no doubt something's rotten in Costa Rica. Corruption like this should not be taken lightly. There definitely needs to be an investigation into this incident. The CSAC needs to look into Dwyer's activities and determine why she has to take one of her fighters all the way to Costa Rica to fight, and the officials in Costa Rica need to investigate Jean-Francois Billon.

How very generous of the promoter to offer a No-Contest (NC) and have the fighters meet in the ring again. Franca's a smart guy, though, and he's not having any part of it.

I'm willing to face Kheder again, but not at an XVT event.
-- Hermes Franca

I don't blame him. I think all fighters and MMA professionals should make note of the players in this drama, specifically the sponsor, promoter, and promotion, and think twice before doing any business with them in the future. It's people like this who not only give MMA a bad name, but also prove why MMA should be regulated, not swept aside vis-a-vis Bob Reilly

Take a look at the video below, and go here to read Mike Chiappetta's entire article.

Evolution AMMA fighter mounts Ref while still out cold!

This is why it's important MMA Refs train in the martial arts! The ref did a good job jumping in and stopping the fight. The fighter was obviously on adrenaline - I think the ref was smart to tap out!

MMA Referee Camera - Check it out!

Ref cams are pretty cool - they allow fans to see the fight from a ref's point of view, and make you feel like you're actually ref'ing the fight!

Kent Maichle: My First Day on the Job as an MMA Ref!

Picture of Kent Maichle Courtesy of Adam Sandoval from Combat USA
Our first event in Wisconsin was a grand success. Combat USA went off without a hitch in Green Bay on 9/11. The organization had been conducting tournaments in 4 different weight classes through out the year, with the finals being held on the evening of our Milestone.

As if regulatory ground breaking was not enough, we supported a packed card with Amateur fights, a Professional Undercard, and then the potential of 4 5min round championship battles... Go big or go home right? :)

The role I played on this evening was that of Inspector where I helped to watch/inspect hand wraps in the blue locker room, monitor consumables, and validate that only approved materials were taken to the cage with a fighter and his team. In addition, I escorted the fighters to the cage side where a Wisconsin Dept of Regulations and Licensing (DRL) employee conducted final checks before the contest.

This was a sold out event with an extremely enthusiastic crowd. Best of all the regulations put in place by Wisconsin law makers helped to insure the integrity of the event, the safety of participants, and allowed the promotion to please the many fans in attendance (both in person and via Internet PPV).
